Despite all our virtual connectedness, loneliness has become an epidemic in both the U.S. (Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation (hhs.gov)) and worldwide (WHO declares loneliness a ‘global public health concern’ | Global development | The Guardian).
As so much has changed with how we interact with other human beings over the last several years, our meaningful interactions have decreased. No one is immune to this, and the consequences are many, including the increased risk of heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline. The health impact is comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day (Prolonged Social Isolation and Loneliness are Equivalent to Smoking 15 Cigarettes A Day | Extension (unh.edu).
As a prosocial species, human connection is not a luxury – it’s essential for our survival.
Giving (and getting) gifts can be a lot of fun. This holiday season, also consider making your presence a present by engaging in meaningful activities that foster human connection. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- talk with someone you don't know very well at the work party
- check in with a neighbor
- gift an experience to a child
- visit a loved one
- commit to evening walks with your partner
- check out that club you’ve been thinking about joining
- sign up for an in-person class
- organize a neighborhood gathering
- start a new in-person tradition with your family or friends
By making an intentional effort to prioritize human connection, you can help combat the loneliness epidemic and gift yourself with something that truly makes a difference!
